He served in World War II with Allies. He was wounded, but hemorrhaged to death during the surgery probably in London, England.

Ireland tried to stay neutral during World War II. And..the Irish named those that left Ireland to help fight with the British and Allies…deserters. But…he fought to help keep the Nazis from conquering the world. To me he was a hero…he was fighting for what he thought was right. If he had gone back to Ireland he would have been banned from any kind of government employment. David would have had no way to feed his family. There were very few jobs to be had. He would have been shamed and ostracized. His widow, Jean Marie (Frankham) Aherne raised their children in London, England.

David and Jean had four children: Anne, Adrian (D.G.), David Anthony, and Rose Marie Aherne-Conroy in London, London, England, United Kingdom.

Chippenham is an historic market town in Wiltshire, England, 13 miles (21 km) east of Bath and 96 miles (154 km) west of London. The town was established on a crossing of the River Avon and some form of settlement is believed to have existed there since before Roman times. It was a royal vill, and probably a royal hunting lodge, under Alfred the Great. The primary school, King’s Lodge School, gets its name from this tradition. source: Wikipedia
